This article is a brief overview of an innovative three year Australian Research Council project seeking to determine the nature of the multimodal grammatical design knowledge that can inform multimedia authoring, and how and to what extent, this can be effectively mediated to students. Using Kahootz, an Australian made 3D animation software program, a multimodal 3D animation design framework and pedagogy has been developed and is being trialled with middle years students to develop their skills and knowledge as multimodal authors and to enable them to participate effectively in a world where communication is increasingly digital, online and multimodal.
